One of the most influential businessmen today is George Soros. He was born in Hungary and had to endure the Second World War as a young boy. His ethnicity is Jewish, and during the occupation of Hungary, his family managed to evade the Nazis who are pursuing Jews in order for them to be executed on concentration camps. The horrors of war have been implanted on the mind of the young George Soros, and he vowed to change the world one day if he managed to get the chance. When the war is over, George Soros headed to London to study, and after he graduated, he immigrated to the United States. He had a very difficult life overseas at first, but he managed to adapt, and used the skills he learned in school to create a business and invest in so many things. His fortune came when he established a fund, and everything happened so fast that he was already making millions of dollars. These millions would soon turn into billions, and his financial empire would soon taking over smaller corporations and acquiring other firms. He then managed to set up satellite offices around the world, and the sheer number of profit coming into his personal wealth resulted to him being named as one of the most successful investors in history. And then, George Soros remembered the war he has witnessed as a child. The horrors of it flashbacked into his memory, and he have seen how inequality became evident in the world. Discrimination is prevalent, racism still exists, and inequalities are noticeable with the rich becoming richer and the poor becoming poorer. There is also oppression happening all throughout the world, with different governments persecuting their own people who are trying to fight for change. The present condition of society has contributed to his eagerness that these negativities must come to an end. He created the Open Society Foundations, which aims to connect groups and organizations around the world who has the same objective as he do – to push for a world where there is no discrimination, and everyone is equal. This foundation has helped a lot of people, especially those who are considered to be society’s outcasts. George Soros has given over $12 billion to support these groups, who are doing the best that they can to promote equality, especially for states that have oppressive governments. George Soros is very positive that despite his old age, he will still be able to see the fruits of his labor, and that he would wake up one day to see that everyone is living in perfect harmony full of love towards each other.
Aside from him supporting groups and organizations under the Open Society Foundations, he is also actively participating in philanthropic activities. He is giving away scholarships to deserving children across the globe, and has given some of his fortune to charities and researches that would benefit the lives of everyone. Betsy was born in 1958 to her able parents; Elsa and Edgar, who were entrepreneurs with a conspicuously high standing. She went ahead to pursue her bachelors’ degree in Arts from Calvin College. Apparently, DeVos had a particular liking for politics and has taken part in Michigan Republican Party since 1982. She served several positions while there among them being; local precinct delegate, national committeewoman, chairperson and at some point an editor of the ‘Inside Michigan Politics’ bulletin. Again in 2003, she sought the presidents’ position, and sure enough, she qualified unopposed.
Betsy DeVos’ Charitable Works
Betsy and her husband Dick founded a charitable organization in 1989 and had since been channeling their million dollars towards its growth. They are strong in Christian beliefs, most likely reason that has made President Trump get inclined towards her. As per the tax records, in 2015 the couple donated over $10 million to a variety of organizations and went ahead to pledge even more, to be given in years to come. Among the benefiting organizations include; The Partnership for Educational Justice, Success Academy Charter Schools, The Potter’s House, Conservative organizations as well as various other colleges and universities across the country.
Why Betsy DeVos Deserves an Influential Position in Education Sector
I find it saddening that Barbara Miner could publish an article reprimanding Betsy. She alleges that Betsy is after introducing a voucher program to replace the current “democratically controlled public schools” system. There is so much elusiveness in the said allegations considering that the system is run by civil servants, and not necessarily democratically controlled. Again the system in use operates on goals that have the least interest of the children, which is probably the reason why survey shows that most color communities support vouchers. I find Betsy being the ideal person to handle the position of US education secretary. Apparently, as long as a school meets the states’ standards, use of vouchers should not be restricted. No doubt Betsy is an iron woman who is passionate for God. Having been in politics has taught her to be resilient. I am confident that she has accumulated a lot of leadership qualities following the various positions she has served. As at now, she feels greatly honored to serve in the president Trump’s regime. Her passion is unstoppable, and the zeal unrelenting. At no point will DeVos stoop low or shy from any office, however influential. She is an epitome of resilience. When Betsy talks of vouchers, I know that her motive is positive, especially towards the children. It is only this month that she assumed office and I cannot wait for the transformation she will bring in the education sector. Folllow Betsy on Twitter
George Soros came into the limelight during the 2004 elections in the US. The billionaire investor spent over $27 million, trying to make sure that George W. Bush didn’t get into office. He spent this cash on Bush’s opponents at http://www.politico.com/story/2016/07/george-soros-democratic-convention-226267. Many thought that he wouldn’t reemerge after this. Contrary to this, Soros has reemerged. The billionaire has pledged over $25 million to fund Hillary Clinton’s campaign. The funds are to be used to also fund other Democratic candidates. Sources close to him indicate that Soros may give more as the countdown to Election Day keeps going.
The 85-year-old was expected to appear at the Democratic Convention, something he hasn’t done before. Soros, however, canceled this trip. An associate of his says that the trip was canceled because George Soros wanted to monitor Europe’s economic situation closely, since he had gone back to active trading.
Those close to Soros, however, have seemingly noted a strong revival in his engagement with politics. This is evident as Soros hadn’t been politically active for quite a long time. What seems to motivate him is the strong faith he has on the Democrat candidate. His dislike for Trump also seems to be another motivating factor. George Soros is known to have compared Trump’s work to that of ISIS, since Trump works by stoking fears.
Michael Vachon, Soros’ official political advisor, seems to agree with this. He states that although his boss has been known to contribute to Democratic causes consistently, the donations have been exponentially high this time. He goes on to explain that the donations even began before Trump was selected as the Republicans’ candidate on opensocietyfoundations.org. This is because of the difference in ideologies that Soros and the republicans had. The issues that the republicans brought forth seem to have contradicted what Soros was standing for. The immigration reform and religious tolerance are just but a few of such ideologies.
This move by Soros has seen other significant donors contribute to Clinton’s campaign on Forbes. Tom Steyer, an environmentalist from San Francisco, pumped in over $30 million. Don Sussman, the founder of the New York hedge, has made contributions that total to $13.2 million for various purposes. Media personalities, Fred Eychaner and Haim Saban, have donated a total of over $20 million to the campaigns.
