Avaaz gives a voice to people around the globe

Avaaz means song or voice in Persian. It is mostly an online-organization at the moment, but it is expanding its effort into real-world protests and to organizing disparate group of activists who are interested in different causes. The causes, for the most part, are all considered progressive causes. So far, only the issue of net neutrality falls out of the progressive bubble.

The current focus of Avaaz is to demonstrate leadership through people who are trying to serve the world. The form of servant leadership encouraged by the organization is not easily grasped at first, but it is easy to understand in concept. Avaaz wants to encourage others to engage in leadership through example. The site lets people start their own petitions and organize protests about the causes they care about.

Members can also use the resources provided by the site to spread news about protests related to important causes, and keep up on the latest news involving many progressive ideals. The organization, which takes its name for Persian, started almost six years ago. In 2011, the Arab Spring and Iranian protests were in full swing. Members of Avaaz helped Iranian protesters by setting up proxy servers. The protesters could use these servers to upload videos of the protests on public web sites.

The organization continues the work it started five years ago, and it is working to oppose some of the more extreme policies favored by the current presidential administration. It does not have a US-focus, however. It works with like-minded people around the globe.

Larkin & Lacey

You may think that only people who are in the minority have civil rights that should be defended. This is not the case. It may be surprising to you, but even demographics that exist in large numbers, or are the majority, need protection. A good example of this is laborers. Nearly everyone is a laborer.

However, that does not mean that laborers don’t suffer from human rights abuses. Laborers started unions to work together and to have a political voice. From these unions came labor organizations that weren’t just unions themselves, but consisted of a variety of different unions working together.

Two great example of this were the Congress of Industrial Organization and the American Federation of Labor. These two organizations opposed each other, though they eventually melted into one organization—the AFL-CIO. In the 2000s, due to internal discourse some unions left the AFL-CIO and started their own rival organization—Change To Win. Read more: Jim Larkin | Crunchbase

Unions, more or less, do a pretty good job to protect the rights of their members. Many provide health insurance, career guidance for the children of members, income in times of unemployment and guide members toward employment. The unions set humane hours and rates that employers are supposed to follow.

The American Southwest is flooded with an enormous Hispanic population. Much of this population consists of immigrants, and many of those immigrants are undocumented. Sheriff Arpaio, a local politician in Maricopa county, was wrongfully racially profiling and roughly handling people who he thought were “undocumented.” Two writers, Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey, wrote about this in a publication.

As a result, they had their houses broken into by law enforcement, and they were forced into separate jails. After the incident, the two men pursued this wrongdoing in court.

Because they were in the right and Maricopa County was in the wrong, they gladly received a huge settlement. Instead of living the high life and throwing their money away on ludicrous, frivolous stuff, they invested in the Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund.

The Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund has a deep zeal for promoting the existence of DACA. They are outraged about the recent decision to stop and restrict DACA. Their cause is provide as much help as possible to immigrants in every way, shape and form–from giving rations to those who are making the trek over the border to those who are living here and are in need of education.

There is also oppression happening all throughout the world, with different governments persecuting their own people who are trying to fight for change. He is a challenge to these dictators because of his unstoppable passion and goal of eliminating violations to human rights throughout the world.
